Martin is a Professor of Computer Science at Rutgers, where he has been on the faculty since 1991. His research on the algorithmic theory of storage system for big data. He has also worked in industry during this time, at Bell Labs in 1997-98 and at Google 2000-2002. In 2008, Martin founded Tokutek, a database performance software company, where he served as CTO until its acquisition in 2015. Martin received his BS from the University of South Carolina, his MD from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and his PhD from the University of Maryland. He has served on the board of Lambda Legal. He lives in New York City with his husband and 15 year old twins.
